Studies have demonstrated that early literacy skills such as phonological awareness, vocabulary development, and print concepts are crucial to learning to read and that early reading invention can change the trajectory of a child’s academic path. To ensure each student is achieving at high levels, Clear Vista is putting a heavy emphasis on early reading skills and providing as much support as we can in this area.
We have a dedicated Early Literacy Teacher Lead responsible for providing literacy instruction and intervention to K-3 students, individually and in small groups. The Early Literacy Teacher Lead is also a literacy coach to classroom teachers, supporting a job-embedded approach to professional development and teacher collaboration. They will allocate much of their daily time to working with students and staff to address literacy learning needs.
Specifically, the Early Literacy Teacher Lead will be collaborating with teachers to identify students requiring Tier 2 and 3 literacy intervention. They will then help to establish caseloads so that each child's needs are being met and their learning is improving. These students may be given additional time and resources to develop their literacy skills. The Literacy Teacher Lead will also be in Kindergarten and Grade 1-3 classrooms to help build capacity in Teachers to improve literacy instruction within their classrooms.
Through the year, tips and at-home activities will be shared with parents to encourage them to continue this skill development at home with their children. As a parent, reading to and with children can be the most impactful way to set your child up for success at school.
